Frequently asked questions

The questions we are asked most often before a remap or before someone brings a vehicle in, grouped by topic. Each answer is short and links to the page that explains it in depth.

In short

Reprogramaciones MBV is the ECU remapping and automotive electronics brand of Eurorepar Talleres Hnos. Barriopedro Gil, in Alcalá de Henares. We remap engine and gearbox control units on cars, vans, motorbikes and commercial and agricultural vehicles, always keeping the original software and with a verifiable EVC WinOLS licence. ECU remapping starts from from €200 + VAT (€242 including VAT), and engine ECU or BSI cloning from from €100 + VAT (€121 including VAT); everything else is quoted before we start. We work at the workshop or come to you anywhere in the Community of Madrid. A remap that changes the power has to be legalised as a vehicle modification.

About ECU remapping

What exactly is remapping an ECU?

Changing part of the software that runs the engine (or the gearbox): how much turbo boost it asks for, how much fuel it injects, how much torque it lets through. No parts are changed, unless the job is designed for upgraded parts. The different types are explained under ECU remapping.

Is it the same as a "chip" or a power box?

No. A power box is a unit that is spliced into the sensors and makes them tell the ECU something different from reality, so that it injects more. ECU remapping adjusts the maps of the ECU itself, which keeps working with real data and with all its protections. We compare them on the Stage 1 page.

Can any vehicle be remapped?

Almost any vehicle with an engine ECU can be read, but it isn't worthwhile on all of them. Where it makes most sense is on turbocharged engines, diesel or petrol. On a naturally aspirated engine the margin is small, on most hybrids it isn't worth it, and on an electric car there is no combustion engine to adjust. Each manufacturer has its own quirks: we cover them under makes.

Does it shorten the engine's life?

It depends on how much you ask of it and what condition it is in. A tune that respects the limits of the clutch, turbo, injection and temperatures, on a healthy, well-maintained engine, works within reasonable margins. A file that squeezes out the maximum, on an engine with faults or without maintenance, does speed up wear. That is why we run diagnostics first and tell you when it isn't a good idea.

Will I have to use higher-octane petrol?

Only if the file has been developed for that fuel. In that case we will tell you before we start, because afterwards you would always have to fill up with it. It doesn't apply to diesel.

Do you work on motorbikes, lorries or tractors?

Yes: motorbikes and commercial and agricultural vehicles have their own pages, because each has its own particularities.

ITV, insurance and warranty

Do I have to legalise the remap?

If it can change the engine's maximum power, yes: it is a vehicle modification (reforma) that must be legalised (code 2.9 of the Vehicle Modifications Manual), processed with a report from a technical service, a workshop certificate and an inspection at the ITV (Spain's compulsory periodic vehicle inspection, similar to the UK MOT). We issue the workshop certificate. We explain it, with the regulations linked, under legality, ITV and insurance.

Do I have to tell my insurer?

Spain's Insurance Contract Act requires you to tell the insurer about anything that increases the risk. If you don't and there is a claim, it may reduce the payout or, if there was bad faith, not pay. The prudent thing is to ask them in writing before remapping.

Can you remove the particulate filter so it passes the ITV more easily?

It is the other way round: a missing or deleted particulate filter, EGR or AdBlue system is a major defect at the ITV. On road cars we don't delete them; we diagnose why they are failing and repair them. It is all under deletes.

What do I do if I'm going to sell the remapped car?

If the remap hasn't been legalised, the cleanest option is to go back to the factory software before selling it: we explain this under back to stock software. If it has been legalised, it appears in the vehicle's documents and the buyer will see it.

Will I lose the manufacturer's warranty?

Not automatically for everything, but the manufacturer may refuse to cover faults it links to the modified software, and arguing the point isn't easy. If the car is under warranty and it worries you, the prudent thing is to wait. The nuances are under legality, ITV and insurance.

What guarantee does your work carry?

The legal guarantee in force for vehicle repairs, on the terms set by the regulations. We explain it under how we work.

Prices and lead times

How much does it cost?

We have three public prices: ECU remapping from €200 + VAT (€242 including VAT), engine ECU cloning from €100 + VAT (€121 including VAT) and BSI cloning from €100 + VAT (€121 including VAT). The starting price doesn't include the vehicle's preliminary check. Everything else is quoted for the specific vehicle. They are all together on the prices page.

How do I pay?

In cash, by Bizum (Spanish instant bank payment), by card or by bank transfer. If you are a business, terms and volume pricing are agreed case by case.

How long do you take to reply to a quote request?

We reply within 24 hours at most. For an appointment, book 48 hours in advance; if it is a same-day emergency, it can be handled with a surcharge we tell you about when you contact us.

Why don't you publish the exact price for my car?

Because it depends on things we only know once the vehicle is identified: whether the ECU can be read through the diagnostic socket or has to be removed and opened, whether the gearbox also needs work and whether we come to you. We give you a firm price before we start.

How long do I have to leave the vehicle?

It depends on how that ECU is read and on the job. One that is read through the diagnostic socket is a completely different matter from one that has to be removed and opened. We give you the timescale when we confirm the appointment, with the vehicle identified.

Workshop and mobile service

Where are you and what are your opening hours?

At Ronda de la Pescadería, 24, bajo, 28801 Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), Monday to Friday, 8:00–14:00 and 16:00–19:30 (closed on Saturday and Sunday). Those hours apply to the workshop, to phone or WhatsApp enquiries and to call-outs; we are closed at weekends. It is the workshop of Eurorepar Talleres Hnos. Barriopedro Gil, whose ECU remapping brand we are. More information about the area under Alcalá de Henares.

Can you come to my home or my business?

Yes, anywhere in the Community of Madrid: to your home, your garage or your business. If your vehicle's ECU has to be opened, we will recommend doing it at the workshop. The call-out is quoted individually and is included in the price we give you before we start. We need a power socket where the vehicle is. We explain it under mobile service.

Do you work outside the Community of Madrid?

Call-outs are only within the Community of Madrid. If you are outside it, you can bring the vehicle to the workshop. The file service and remote coding for garages also reach areas close to the region.

I run a garage. Can you work for me?

Yes: we develop the files for you through the file service, help you remotely with remote coding or come to your garage. It is all under garages.

If your question isn't here, ask us. If you tell us the vehicle, the answer will be much more specific.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

What details should I send you to ask for a quote?

Make, model, engine and year; whether it is manual or automatic; what you want done; and whether the vehicle has any fault or non-original parts. A photo of the vehicle's technical data sheet (ficha técnica) saves almost all the questions. You can use WhatsApp or the quote form.

Do you work with both private customers and businesses?

Yes, both. If you are a private customer, start with private customers. If you have a garage, a used-car dealership or a fleet, there are specific services under trade customers.

My car has a warning light on. Can you remap it anyway?

First we need to know what it is. With electronic diagnostics we track down the fault; once it is fixed, we carry on. Remapping on top of a fault only hides it for a while.

What does it mean that your WinOLS licence is verifiable?

That the software's maker, EVC, lets anyone check publicly that the licence is genuine. The link is at the foot of every page and we explain it under how we work.

Do you remap automatic gearboxes too?

Yes. The gearbox control unit can be adjusted on its own or together with the engine ECU: shift points, response and torque limit. It is covered under automatic gearboxes.

Do you do anything with the odometer?

We repair instrument clusters that fail, but we don't alter the mileage. It is information the buyer of a vehicle has the right to know exactly as it is.
