Instrument cluster repair

The instrument cluster is the part of the car you look at most, which is why its faults show up straight away: a display with lines across it, a needle reading zero or a warning light that does not come on. We explain which faults can be fixed and which mean it has to be replaced.

In short

Instrument cluster repair fixes faults such as dead pixels or lines on the display, sticking or inaccurate needles, failed backlighting, black screens or a cluster that cuts out now and then. Many come down to one component (a needle motor, a cracked solder joint, the display connection) and are fixed without replacing the cluster, keeping its data: we repair any cluster fault once diagnosed. We never alter the mileage: it is fraud, and the ITV (Spain's compulsory vehicle inspection, similar to the UK MOT) classes it as a major defect. Price on request depending on the fault and model. At our workshop in Alcalá de Henares or we come to you within the Community of Madrid.

Which faults you see and what is behind them

Each instrument cluster fault has a typical cause. This is the list of what we see most and what is usually behind it:

What you seeMost common causeCan it be fixed without replacing the cluster?
Dead pixels, lines or cut-off text on the information displayWorn display connection (ribbon or contacts), or the display itselfOften yes, by replacing the connection or the display
A needle sticks, trembles or reads zeroWorn stepper motor for that needleYes, by replacing the motor and calibrating the needle
All the needles drop to zero at onceCluster power supply or cracked solder jointsUsually yes
Part of the cluster not litBlown backlights (bulbs or LEDs)Yes
Cluster that switches itself off and onDry solder joints or a connector with a poor contactUsually yes
Completely black screen on a digital clusterPower supply, backlighting or damaged displayDepends on the cause
Warning lights that do not come on when you turn the ignition onThe warning light's LED or a communication fault with another moduleYes, once it has been traced

That last row matters more than it seems: when you turn the ignition on, the brake, airbag or oil pressure warning lights should come on for a moment. If one does not, you will not know when there really is a problem.

First, find out whether the cluster is to blame

The instrument cluster only shows what other control units tell it. If the temperature needle does not rise, the cause may lie in the temperature sensor, the thermostat or a communication fault, not in the cluster. That is why, before removing it:

  1. We read the fault codes in all the control units

a communication fault with the cluster leaves a trace in several modules.

  2. We compare the data with the needle

with diagnostics we see what speed, temperature or level is reaching the cluster. If the data is right and the cluster does not show it, the fault is the cluster's.

  3. Actuator test

many clusters allow the needles to be moved and all the segments to be lit from the diagnostic equipment. You can see straight away which motor or which area is failing.

  4. Removal and repair

only once we know what needs replacing.

  5. Final check

with it fitted in the car, we check the needles, warning lights, lighting and display.

If it turns out the fault is not in the cluster, we tell you and go after the real cause with electronic diagnostics.

Repair or replace

We repair any instrument cluster fault once it has been diagnosed, and repairing yours has one clear advantage: it is still yours. It keeps its configuration, its pairing with the rest of the car and its odometer reading, with nothing to adapt.

Even so, there are cases where replacing it may be the better deal, and we will tell you:

  • The screen is physically broken and there is no replacement part for it.
  • The circuit is damaged by water or by a short circuit in several areas.
  • The cluster is part of the immobiliser and is so badly damaged that it cannot be worked on without risk.

In that case, a new or used cluster has to be configured for your car, and its odometer reading has to match the vehicle's real mileage. We explain how it is handled on your model before you buy anything. If the fault is in the comfort module and not in the cluster, see BSI cloning.

The mileage is not touched

If you suspect the car you have bought has had its mileage changed, compare the reading with those from previous ITV inspections shown in the vehicle report from the DGT (Spain's traffic authority), and consult a lawyer or a consumer protection office.

If you send us just the cluster

You do not need to bring the car if you already have the cluster removed: you can send it to us by courier or we can collect it. Tell us first on WhatsApp what it is doing, with the make, model and year, so we know what to look for. The repair time depends on the fault and the part, so we will tell you once we have seen it.

Clusters with hidden features

On some Volkswagen Group cars the instrument cluster supports views or displays that are switched off at the factory and depend on the equipment fitted. It is not a repair, it is coding: we explain it in VAG hidden feature activation.

How much it costs

Instrument cluster repair is price on request. The price depends on:

  • The fault: a needle motor or the lighting is nothing like a display.
  • The type of cluster: analogue with a small display or fully digital.
  • How much work it is to remove: on some models it comes out in minutes and on others part of the dashboard has to be taken apart.

Send us a photo or a short video of the fault with the ignition on: that is already enough for us to point you in the right direction. You can ask for the price on the quote form.

A photo or video of the cluster with the ignition on tells us a lot. Send it with the make, model and year and we will tell you whether it can be fixed.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive with a faulty instrument cluster?

It depends on what has failed. If you cannot see your speed, the fuel level or the safety warning lights (brakes, oil pressure, airbag), you should not, and at the ITV it is a defect. If only the lighting in one area or a few pixels on the information display have failed, it is a nuisance, but it is best not to let it get worse.

Is anything lost when the cluster is removed?

Removing and refitting it does not erase its data. When repairing, we work on your own cluster, so it keeps its configuration and its odometer reading exactly as they were.

A needle reads too high or too low. Is it the cluster or the sensor?

It could be either. If the fuel gauge reads oddly, it could be the fuel level sender in the tank; if the temperature gauge does not rise, it could be the sensor or the thermostat. That is why, before opening the cluster, we use diagnostics to see what value is reaching it: if the data is correct and the needle does not reflect it, it is the cluster.

What if someone offers to sell me a second-hand cluster?

A cluster from another car comes with its own configuration and its own odometer reading, and on many models it is tied to the immobiliser. Check with us before buying it: it is almost always better to repair yours.

Can fully digital clusters be repaired too?

Some faults can, for example power supply, connection or backlighting faults. If the screen itself is broken or has internal marks, it depends on whether the part is available. We will tell you once we have seen it.
