The message usually appears out of nowhere: «engine will not start in X km» or «no start in so many starts». It is not an engine fault; it is the AdBlue system doing what the regulations require of it. We explain why it counts down, what triggers it and how to stop it legally.

**In short:** The AdBlue countdown is required for type approval: when the car detects that the fluid is running low, is the wrong quality or is not being injected properly, it warns you and, if nothing is corrected, stops the engine restarting once the countdown ends. Topping up only stops it if the level was the problem; if it is the pump, heater, injector or a NOx sensor, it has to be diagnosed and repaired. Removing AdBlue from a road vehicle is not a legal way out; that delete is for motorsport only. We check the system at our workshop in Alcalá de Henares or wherever the vehicle has been left in the Community of Madrid, price on request.

## Why your car is counting down

The countdown is not a whim of the manufacturer. Regulation (EU) 2017/1151, which sets out how emissions are type-approved for cars and vans, requires every vehicle that uses a reagent such as AdBlue to have two things:

- **A warning system** that tells you the level is dropping, that the fluid is not the right quality or that dosing has been interrupted. For the level, the warning has to come on with a margin (the regulation talks about at least 2,400 km before the tank runs dry) and it cannot be switched off until the problem is corrected.
- **An inducement system** that stops the engine from restarting if nobody corrects the problem. The manufacturer chooses how: a countdown of starts or kilometres, blocking the start after the next refuelling, or limiting the speed before blocking it. That is why each make shows a different message, but they all lead to the same end.

What matters to you: **the engine is not faulty**, but if the count reaches zero it will not start again until the problem is solved. Do not push it: with some margin left, the car can be driven to the workshop; at zero, it means a tow truck or us coming to you.

## How AdBlue works, in three parts

AdBlue is a solution of urea in demineralised water, at 32.5% according to the ISO 22241 standard. It is injected into the exhaust ahead of a special catalytic converter, the **SCR** (selective catalytic reduction). With heat, the urea releases ammonia, which reacts in the SCR with the nitrogen oxides (NOx) and turns them into nitrogen and water vapour.

| Part | Where it is | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| Tank with pump module | Next to the fuel tank, under the boot or behind a blue cap | Stores the fluid, heats it in cold weather, measures level and quality and pumps it |
| Dosing injector | In the exhaust pipe, ahead of the SCR | Sprays the amount the ECU asks for |
| NOx and temperature sensors | Before and after the SCR catalytic converter | Check that the nitrogen oxides really do go down |

The ECU (engine control unit) compares what it has injected with what the sensors measure. If the figures do not add up, it suspects the fluid, the dosing or the catalytic converter, and the warning comes on.

## What triggers the countdown and what is usually behind it

| What you see | What is usually happening | What we check |
|---|---|---|
| Low level warning with a full tank | Level sensor in the tank module | Level read by the diagnostics against the real level |
| «Incorrect AdBlue quality» | Diluted, contaminated or very old fluid; quality sensor | Fluid test and sensor values |
| System fault that appears in winter | Heater in the tank or in the lines | Heater resistance and behaviour on a cold start |
| Dosing fault | Pump with no pressure, injector blocked by crystals, leaking pipe | Pump pressure, injector flow test, leaks |
| Insufficient SCR efficiency | Ageing NOx sensor or degraded catalytic converter | NOx sensor readings before and after the SCR |
| Warnings that come and go | Corroded connector or wiring, especially underneath the car | Inspection of the loom and the earth points |

The NOx sensor and the pump module are among the most expensive parts of the system, so the last thing we want is to replace them on a hunch. We start with what can be measured: level, quality, pressure, flow and what the sensors read with the engine running.

## What to do when the warning appears

1. **Read the exact message**: «level» is not the same as «quality» or «system fault». Take a photo of it; it helps us a lot.
2. **If it is the level, top up** with AdBlue from a sealed container, not from a can that was opened months ago. Wait for the car to recognise the new level.
3. **If it is not the level or the warning does not go away**, do not keep using up starts: every one counts. Message us with the make, model, engine and the message.
4. **Diagnosis**: we read the fault codes in the engine ECU, check the fluid and measure the pump, heaters, injector and NOx sensors.
5. **Repair and reset**: once the cause has been corrected, the system is reset through the diagnostic socket and we check with the engine running that it does not trigger again.

If the vehicle is already at zero and will not start, we can come to you within the Community of Madrid (the Madrid region) and carry out the diagnosis there; we explain how in [mobile service](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/trade/mobile-service/).

## AdBlue delete: motorsport only

**Removing the countdown by disabling the SCR is not legal on the road**

Without AdBlue, the engine no longer reduces its NOx. At the vehicle inspection, an emissions system that is missing, altered or not working is a **major defect** (Real Decreto 920/2017, Spain's vehicle inspection regulation) and, on the road, driving a vehicle that does not meet its technical conditions is a **serious offence** under the Traffic Act. We only carry out this delete on **motorsport vehicles or vehicles that never use public roads**. Full regulations in [deletes](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/deletes/) and [legality, ITV and insurance](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/legality-itv-insurance/).

In practical terms: a car with the AdBlue deleted no longer has a countdown, but it swaps that problem for others. The ECU runs on a strategy different from the type-approved one, the ITV can read the on-board diagnostic system and, if you sell the car one day, the buyer inherits the problem. On road vehicles, the repair is the way out that gives you peace of mind.

## Vans, lorries and machinery

On delivery vans, motorhomes and fleet vehicles, AdBlue is the same system, with heavier use and sometimes bigger tanks. There, the countdown is not just a nuisance: it means a vehicle off the road and a job left undone. On lorries and buses the type-approval rules are different and, as well as preventing the engine from starting, they provide for limiting the vehicle's performance when the problem is not corrected.

If you run several vehicles, it is in your interest to have the diagnosis done where they are, without moving them. See [commercial and agricultural vehicles](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/commercial-and-agricultural-vehicles/) and, for companies, [fleets](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/trade/fleets/).

## What pushes the bill up or down

Price **on request**. A tank with contaminated fluid is drained and cleaned; a pump, a heater or a NOx sensor are replacement parts. On certain models the pump module sits inside the tank and the tank has to be lowered, which adds labour. And if the vehicle is already at zero and will not start, the call-out is added. You will know the amount before we touch anything; the services with a published price are listed in [prices](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/prices/).

Send us the message the car is showing (a photo is fine) and how many starts or kilometres it has left. We will tell you what it might be and whether it makes sense for us to come to you.

## Frequently asked questions

### I have topped up the AdBlue and the countdown is still running. Is that normal?

It can be for a while: many cars need to detect the new level with the ignition on, or cover a few kilometres, before they clear the warning, and on some you have to add a minimum amount for it to be recognised. If it is still counting after that, the level was not the problem and you need [diagnostics](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/vehicle-diagnostics/).

### Can I put water or another fluid in if I run out of AdBlue?

No. The system monitors the quality of the fluid and, if it is not the urea solution the manufacturer specifies, it detects it and starts the countdown just as if the tank were empty. On top of that, water or contaminated fluid can damage the pump and the injector, which are the expensive parts of the system.

### Why are there white crystals around the injector or the filler cap?

AdBlue that leaks or evaporates leaves crystallised urea behind. Around the cap it is usually from topping up and spilling; around the injector in the exhaust or on the pipes it points to a leak or a dripping injector, and those crystals can end up blocking it.

### Can the countdown be cleared with a diagnostic tool?

The regulations allow the system to be reset through the diagnostic socket once the cause has been repaired, and then checked with the engine running. What does not work is clearing it without a repair: if the cause is still there, the system detects it again and the countdown comes back.

### Does cold weather affect AdBlue?

Yes. AdBlue freezes below zero, which is why the tank and the lines have heaters. If a heater fails, in winter the system takes a long time to become available or throws a dosing error. It is one of the first things we check when the warnings appear mainly on cold days.

### Do you do AdBlue deletes on work vans?

If the van is driven on public roads, no: a missing or modified emissions control system is a major defect at the ITV (Spain's compulsory periodic vehicle inspection, similar to the UK MOT). What we do is diagnose and repair the fault. If the vehicle only works inside a closed site, tell us about it and we will assess it.
