Renault is the make with a card instead of a key, and also the one that shares its engines most widely with other makes: a dCi could be in a Nissan, a Mercedes or an Opel van. We explain what that means for your car and what we see on the Kangoo, Trafic and Master.

**In short:** What stands out most on Renault and Dacia is the Renault hands-free key card, which is paired with the central cabin module and whose reader is a common fault, and the dCi (diesel) and TCe (petrol) engines, which Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Fiat also fit. That means we can remap with very broad knowledge of the engine, but the file is always built on your specific ECU. On Kangoo, Trafic and Master vans the approach is usually about working under load and using less fuel. ECU remapping from from €200 + VAT (€242 including VAT), in Alcalá de Henares or with us coming to you anywhere in the Community of Madrid (the Madrid region).

## The Renault key card: how it works and where it fails

For years now, many Renaults haven't had a traditional key: they have a **card**. On some models it goes into a slot in the dashboard; on others, with hands-free access, you only need to carry it with you. Either way, the card is just one part of the system:

| Part | What it does | What goes wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Card | Holds the immobiliser transponder and the buttons | Battery, worn buttons, knocks |
| Card reader | Detects the card and passes it on to the car | Reader contacts and electronics, especially slot-type readers |
| Central cabin module | Stores the immobiliser data and authorises starting | Data loss after a voltage spike, damp |
| Engine ECU | Only starts if the central module gives it permission | When replaced with a used one, it doesn't recognise the car |

When the instrument cluster says it can't detect the card, the most common cause isn't the card but the **reader**. And when the engine ECU or central module is replaced with a used unit, they have to be matched to each other: we sort this out with [ECU cloning](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/ecu-cloning/) or one of our [no-start solutions](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/no-start-solutions/). For new or spare cards, see [keys](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/car-keys/).

Dacia, on the other hand, uses a **conventional key** with a remote fob on most models, and on the most recent ones, depending on trim level, a card as well. The electronics are simpler and, in general, have fewer faults of this kind.

## A Renault engine might be in another make

Renault's alliance with Nissan and its agreements with Mercedes-Benz, Opel and Fiat mean its engines turn up under other badges:

| Renault engine | You'll also find it in |
|---|---|
| 1.5 dCi (diesel) | Nissan and Mercedes-Benz (A-Class, B-Class, Citan) |
| 1.6 dCi (diesel) | Nissan, Opel Vivaro, Fiat Talento and Mercedes-Benz (some Vito and C-Class) |
| 2.3 dCi (diesel) | Nissan and Opel Movano |
| 1.3 TCe (petrol, developed with Mercedes) | Nissan and Mercedes-Benz |

For remapping, that has an advantage: the engine's behaviour and its weak points are well known. But it doesn't mean the file is the same. **Each make calibrates its own version**, and the ECU, turbo, exhaust or gearbox may differ. We always start from the read of your ECU. On Renault diesels it's common to find Continental (SID family) and Delphi ECUs, and the more recent, protected ones have to be worked on the bench or by opening the unit.

## Kangoo, Trafic and Master: working vans

Renault's three vans cover everything from urban deliveries (Kangoo) to light heavy transport (Master), with the 1.5, 1.6 / 2.0 and 2.3 dCi depending on the generation. The people who use them don't ask for power: they ask for a van **that climbs hills loaded without struggling, uses no more fuel than it needs and doesn't break down**. For that we suggest the [Eco remap](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/ecu-remapping/eco/), with the torque where a van uses it.

Before suggesting it, on these vans we check:

1. **Clutch and dual-mass flywheel**: with many hours under load and hill starts, this is the first thing to suffer.
2. **DPF (diesel particulate filter) and, on Euro 6 vans, AdBlue**: if there are warnings, they get repaired first. On road vehicles they aren't deleted; we explain why in [deletes](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/deletes/).
3. **Turbo and its pipework**: an air leak on a loaded van shows up straight away.

If the van is part of a fleet or is a heavier vehicle, see [commercial vehicles](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/commercial-and-agricultural-vehicles/) as well.

## EDC and automated manual gearboxes

Renault and Dacia use **dual-clutch** automatic gearboxes (which the make calls EDC) and, on some Dacias, a single-clutch **automated manual**. Both have their own control unit and a limited torque margin: if the engine is remapped without taking them into account, judder or protection modes can appear. With an automatic car, we always look at the gearbox alongside the engine. The details are in [automatic gearboxes](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/automatic-gearbox-tuning/).

The ITV (Spain's compulsory periodic vehicle inspection, similar to the UK MOT), insurance and warranty side doesn't change with the make: you'll find it in [legality, ITV and insurance](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/legality-itv-insurance/).

Tell us the model, engine and year and, if it's a card problem, what message appears on the instrument cluster. We'll tell you what it is and how much it costs.

## Frequently asked questions

### My Renault says "card not detected" – is the card broken?

It could be the card's battery, the card itself or the car's reader. The first step is to change the battery; if nothing changes, we check whether the card responds and whether the reader is communicating with the central module. Very often the problem is the reader.

### Can I get a new card if I've lost the only one I had?

Yes, on most models, but it's more involved than copying an existing one because the security data in the central module has to be accessed. We go into more detail in [keys](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/car-keys/).

### I have a Nissan with a dCi engine – is this page relevant to me?

For the engine, yes: the 1.5 dCi, 1.6 dCi and 2.3 dCi are Renault engines that Nissan also fits. For keys, body electronics and configuration, each make has its own systems. Message us with the model and we'll tell you.

### Do you remap LPG Dacias?

On the versions that run on petrol and LPG, the gas management works in coordination with the engine management. Any change has to take both into account, and in many cases we'll recommend leaving it as it is. We assess it with the car in front of us.

### What is Renault's EDC gearbox?

It's the dual-clutch automatic gearbox used by Renault and Dacia. It has its own control unit and is sensitive to torque: if the engine is remapped, it has to be taken into account. We cover it in [automatic gearboxes](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/automatic-gearbox-tuning/).
