Buying a reading tool is the easy part. The hard part is deciding who you trust with the files from your customers' cars. This is what we would look at if we were on the other side.

**In short:** A file service is a provider that develops remapping files for other garages: the garage reads the ECU with its own tool, sends the original file and gets back the modified one to write. When choosing a provider, check five things: that they work with a verifiable licence for their editing software, that they start from the original file of each car rather than generic maps, that they tell you what they will not do and why, that they respond if something goes wrong after writing, and that they invoice your business. Just as important is what depends on your garage: complete reads, a stable power supply and always keeping the original.

## What is a file service and why does it exist?

A file service separates two trades that used to go together: that of the garage that has the car and reads it, and that of the tuner who knows what to change in the software. The garage provides the vehicle, the tool and the relationship with the customer. The provider supplies the modified file.

For many garages it is the most sensible way to start offering ECU remapping. You do not need to learn to edit maps or buy editing licences; you need to read properly, write properly and choose carefully who you send the files to. This article is about that last part. If you want to see how we do it, it is all in [file service](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/trade/file-service/).

## What should you ask a provider before you start?

There is no provider that is perfect for every garage. There are providers that fit the way you work and others that do not. These questions help you find out before you send the first file, whether to us or to anyone else.

### 1. Which editing software do you use, and can I check the licence?

Files are modified with a specific editing program. Some providers let you verify their licence publicly. On its own it is no guarantee of quality, but it shows the work is done with legitimate, up-to-date tools. We work in WinOLS with verifiable EVC WinOLS licence.

### 2. Do you start from the original file of each car?

This is the most important question. A good file is developed on the exact software of that ECU, because two cars that look the same on the outside can run different software versions. Ask what they do when they receive a file that has already been modified or that does not match the vehicle stated. The answer tells you a lot.

### 3. What do you not do?

A serious provider has lines it will not cross and tells you what they are: incomplete reads it will not accept, cars with faults it asks you to sort out first, jobs it only does under certain conditions. For example, we only develop emissions-system [deletes](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/deletes/) for motorsport vehicles or vehicles that are not driven on public roads. A provider that says yes to everything without asking anything is passing the risk on to you.

### 4. What happens if the car does not run properly after writing?

Writing a file is the beginning, not the end. Ask how they support you if a fault appears, what data they will ask you for (fault code reads, parameter logs) and how quickly they usually respond. And also ask how to flag an urgent issue when the customer is waiting.

### 5. Do you invoice my business, and how does payment work?

It seems obvious, but it is not always the case. You need an invoice in your garage's name for your accounts, and it helps to be clear whether you pay per file, with credits or some other arrangement, so that you can give your customer a fixed quote.

## What depends on your garage?

Even the best file fails on a poor foundation. When a file causes problems, the cause is often not in the development but in how the ECU was read or written.

**Before reading and writing**

- Power supply: Battery maintainer connected; a battery drop halfway through a write is the most expensive fault there is
- Reading method: The right one for that ECU; diagnostic port, bench or boot do not always produce the same file
- Copy of the original: Stored at your garage, with the vehicle identified, before sending anything to anyone
- Prior diagnosis: Fault codes read from all the ECUs and mechanical condition checked
- Information for the provider: Vehicle, ECU, tool, method, non-original parts and what is being requested
- Information for the customer: What is going to be done and what it means for the ITV, insurance and warranty

On that last point, your customer is yours, and giving them the legal information is your job too. You have material to explain it in [remapping and passing the ITV](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/blog/remapping-and-the-itv-inspection/) (Spain's compulsory periodic vehicle inspection, similar to the UK MOT) and in [telling your insurer](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/blog/tell-your-insurer-after-a-remap/).

## Tool first or provider first?

Many garages choose the tool first and the provider afterwards. Sometimes it should be the other way round, because:

- Some tools are sold **tied** to a specific provider (so-called «slave» tools): the files they read can only be opened by that master account. If you later want to work with another provider, you may not be able to.
- Not all tools cover the same ECUs or the same reading methods.
- Each tool's protocol produces files in different formats. Your provider has to be able to work with them.

Ask your future provider which tools work well for them and for which kinds of cars. A ten-minute conversation saves you a purchase that turns out not to fit.

## File service, remote coding or developing it yourself?

| Model | You provide | The provider provides | It suits you if |
|---|---|---|---|
| File service | Tool, reading, writing, diagnostics | The modified file | You get asked for remaps fairly often |
| Remote coding | The car and a connection interface | The connection, the read, the file and the write | You have no tool or the jobs are one-offs |
| Provider at your garage | The car and the space | All the work, at your garage | You would rather not take on any technical part |
| In-house development | Tool, editing licence and training | Nothing | You want ECU remapping to be a major line for your garage |

No option is better than the others in the abstract. Many garages combine several depending on the job, and the same goes for other electronics work that is usually passed on, such as keys: if a customer comes to you with none at all, it will help them to read [what to do if you lose your car key](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/blog/lost-car-key/). If you want to see how we coordinate jobs with other garages, it is in [garages](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/trade/garages/), and remote coding is in [remote coding](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/trade/remote-coding/).

## A simple test to get started

If you are weighing up a provider, do not decide with the most complicated car of the month. Start with a job you know well, for example a standard car in good condition, and pay attention to how the conversation goes: what they ask you beforehand, how they send the file back, how they explain what they have done. In the end, what you need is someone you can talk to when something does not work first time.

And always, always keep the original. If one day the car has to go back to standard, the factory file is what makes it possible, as we explain in [back to stock software](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/back-to-stock-software/).

If you run a garage in the Community of Madrid (the Madrid region) and want to try out how we work, message us before you read the first car. The file service is price on request, depending on the job.

Tell us which tool you have and what kinds of cars you get. We will tell you what we work with and how getting started would look.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can I work with several file providers at the same time?

You can, but keep a clear record of which provider did each car and always keep the original. If a file ever needs to be reviewed, mixing modifications from different providers on the same car makes it very hard to know what the starting point is.

### What happens if my tool works in slave mode?

Some tools are sold tied to a master account, so the files you read can only be opened by that provider. Before buying, ask whether the tool is free or tied, and to whom, because that determines who you will be able to work with.

### Do I need to know how to edit maps to use a file service?

No. What you do need is to be able to read and write safely, diagnose the car beforehand and check it afterwards. Developing the file is precisely what you hand over.

### Is remote coding better than a file service?

They are different things. With a file service you do the reading and writing; with remote coding the provider connects to the car remotely through an interface. Remote coding suits you if you have no tool or for one-off jobs. We explain it in [remote coding](https://www.reprogramacionesmbv.com/en/trade/remote-coding/).
